Our gut is home to tiny creatures that aid in digestion, protect against harm, and facilitate communication between the digestive system and brain.
These microbial communities, comprising bacteria, fungi, and viruses, help maintain our internal health. However, medication use disrupts this balance, and a large new study reveals that the impact can persist for years.
The research, led by genomicist Oliver Aasmets from the University of Tartu in Estonia, found that the effects of various medications, including antibiotics, psycholeptics, antidepressants, proton pump inhibitors, and beta-blockers, can still be detected several years after use.
"The effect of drug usage has been underestimated,"
the team writes in its paper, highlighting the long-term consequences of common medication use on gut health.
Author's summary: Medications disrupt gut balance for years.
