Local Autism Organization Addresses "Cal Fresh Chaos"

In Ventura County, California, a local autism organization is helping adults with autism become self-sufficient through budgeting and cooking skills.

Johanna Hurtado, an Independent Living Services Specialist at Spectacular Services, expressed concern about the impact of the government shutdown on Cal Fresh beneficiaries.

"We're supposed to be helping them, right? We're supposed to take them out grocery shopping. There's no, there's no money this month,"
she said.

About 78,000 people in Ventura County rely on Cal Fresh to afford groceries. The government shutdown has caused significant stress for working families, children, and the elderly.

Kasey Guilfoil from Spectacular Services' Independent Living Services division criticized the situation, saying

"Our people in Washington are still getting paid. Why are they getting paid if they're not working? And these people that rely heavily on these benefits don't get the benefits."
