Shaun Wane is eager to see Hull KR's dynamic winger Joe Burgess return to England duty this weekend. The England head coach praised Burgess and expressed delight in giving the 31-year-old the opportunity to perform on the international stage during the Ashes series.
Burgess will end a 10-year hiatus from international play, having last represented England in the 2015 series against New Zealand. He is set to earn his fourth cap in Leeds facing the Kangaroos. He replaces Dom Young on the wing, who suffered a broken foot during England’s recent 14-4 loss at Everton.
Wane also announced plans for Mikey Lewis to take on a larger role in the upcoming third and final Test, after limited game time last week in Liverpool.
“He’s had a new lease of life at Hull KR, they’ve done a great job with him,” Wane said. “I know ‘Budgie’ - he’s won me a World Club Challenge and he’s a fantastic player. I’m so happy that I can give him a start, and everyone in our squad will now play. That did mean something to me.”
In 2025, Burgess scored 24 tries in 25 games across all competitions for Hull KR, arguably hitting the peak form of his 13-year career. Wane is especially excited to see Burgess compete at Headingley Stadium, where he will face off against Parramatta Eels star Josh Addo-Carr on the wing.
Author’s summary: Shaun Wane eagerly anticipates Joe Burgess’ impactful return to England’s squad after ten years, highlighting his outstanding form and vital role in the Ashes series.
