Victor Wembanyama, after a hot start to the season, has encountered difficulties in the San Antonio Spurs' recent 118-116 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. He described the game as feeling unusually fast, partly due to opposing teams adjusting their defenses specifically against him.
Wembanyama noted that the level of defensive pressure he faced was unprecedented in his experience. He emphasized the need for the Spurs to adapt collectively to these changes.
"Personally, I haven't seen this kind of defense from teams. So we need to adapt as a collective. In the Phoenix game, it was the case as well. We're learning."
The Lakers employed heavy double-teaming, which proved difficult for Wembanyama to handle. He observed that their preparation and readiness to trap him after he caught the ball limited his effectiveness.
"Mostly, it was the doubling. They probably walked in shootaround through all our situations because it seemed like they were very ready. It felt like they let me catch the ball, but they were ready to double to rotate after that."
Wembanyama fouled out near the end while the Spurs trailed 113-112. San Antonio had a chance to tie the game with one second left, but Julian Champagnie missed both free throws after drawing a foul, securing the Lakers' win.
This marked the second time in seven games to start the season that Wembanyama has fouled out, surpassing his total from the previous two seasons combined.
Wembanyama faces intense defensive pressure as teams adjust to his impact, requiring both personal and team adaptations during a challenging season phase.
