Varun Chakaravarthy took the prized wicket of Glenn Maxwell in the fourth T20I between India and Australia at Carrara Oval, Queensland, on Thursday, November 6. The leg-spinner dismissed Maxwell for just 2 runs, leaving Australia reeling at 103/6.
The wicket fell in the 15th over of Australia’s chase. Varun bowled a googly, and Maxwell fell into the trap. The right-handed batsman gave himself room to play it towards the offside but missed completely. The ball struck the top of the off-stump before entering the wicketkeeper’s gloves.
Chakaravarthy finished with figures of 1/26 from his four overs. The World No.1 T20I-ranked bowler has taken five wickets in the series and 26 wickets across 15 matches this year.
A clinical bowling performance helped India maintain the upper hand in the fourth T20I. At the time of writing, Australia were 116/8 after 17 overs, with Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis at the crease.
Sent in to bat first, India posted a total of 167/8 in their 20 overs. Vice-captain Shubman Gill top-scored with 46 runs off 39 balls, including one six and four boundaries. Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, and captain Suryakumar Yadav also contributed scores in the twenties.
Axar Patel provided a strong finish, scoring an unbeaten 21 off 11 balls.
“Varun bowling a googly to dismiss Maxwell was a key moment in the match,” said an analyst.
