Spelthorne Borough Council will hold a Service of Remembrance outside the Council Offices in Knowle Green, Staines-upon-Thames, on Tuesday 11 November to honour those who gave their lives in service to their country.
The service will begin at 10.45am, and all community members are warmly invited to attend. This year’s ceremony is especially significant as it marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, commemorating the end of the Second World War.
Before the service, 429 memorial crosses will be placed outside the Council Offices to remember the men and women from the Spelthorne area who lost their lives during World War II.
The list of names was compiled by local military historian Phil Webb and his wife Eileen Webb in collaboration with Spelthorne Museum.
"Inspired by the museum’s publication Spelthorne Remembered WW1, which recorded the area’s First World War casualties, Phil and Eileen set out to do the same for those who fell in the Second World War."
Their research used sources such as Spelthorne Museum archives, local churches, war memorials, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and copies of the Middlesex Chronicle from the museum’s collection.
The council welcomes feedback on attendees’ experiences via email at [email protected].
