From St Kilda to Kings Cross, from a hill overlooking the MCG to the vast outback, no Australian songwriter has portrayed life across the country quite like Paul Kelly. At 70 years old, this national treasure is releasing his 30th studio album.
The album, named 70, marks a significant milestone for Kelly. He shared that he's never felt happier or performed better than he does now.
“You've got to live that long. Everything else after that is, you know, gravy,”
Kelly remarked on the luck required to reach this age and continue his journey in music.
Even after decades in the industry, Kelly remains active in writing and performing. He described his approach to lyrics as a collection process.
“If I read something, I think ‘that's a good line’, or a line of poetry or something from a book, or just general conversation that's got a good ring to it, I'll write it down,”
He recounted how the phrase “I've done all the dumb things” came from a casual remark overheard at a pub in Richmond called the Corner Hotel.
Paul Kelly's new album 70 will be available starting tomorrow.
Summary: Celebrating his 70th birthday, Paul Kelly releases his 30th album, reflecting on life and songwriting with fresh energy and insight.
