The historical drama Death By Lightning has arrived on Netflix, produced by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss. The four-part limited series explores the events leading to the assassination of the 20th President of the United States, James A. Garfield.
Based on Candice Millard’s acclaimed book Destiny of the Republic, the series brings Garfield’s unexpected rise to the presidency to life. Portrayed by Michael Shannon, Garfield becomes President in 1881 after backing John Sherman, played by Alistair Petrie, in his election campaign.
The plot also centers around Garfield’s would-be assassin, Charles Guiteau, portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen, whose intense admiration for the President turns deadly.
Although the story focuses on a pivotal moment in American history, production for Death By Lightning did not occur in the United States.
Filming took place in Budapest, Hungary, beginning on July 1, 2024, and concluded by October of the same year.
The entire limited series was released on Thursday, November 6, marking its official debut on Netflix for global audiences.
Author’s Summary: A dramatic retelling of James A. Garfield’s assassination, Death By Lightning blends history and intrigue while showcasing striking visuals from its Budapest-based production.
