Golden State faced the Sacramento Kings without three of their biggest players: Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler.
Coach Steve Kerr started a notably inexperienced lineup that included rookie guard Will Richard, second-year center Quentin Post, shooting guard Moses Moody, Brandin Podziemski, and Jonathan Kuminga. This was the least experienced starting five for the Warriors since April 2012, predating Kerr's tenure.
The 2012 lineup featured Klay Thompson, Chris Wright, Jeremy Tyler, Mickell Gladness, and Charles Jenkins. None of the current starters had more than four years of NBA experience.
“Obviously it’s more difficult when you’re missing your stars, but it’s a great opportunity for a lot of guys,” Kerr said before the game.
“I was looking to see energy, pace from the makeshift group. Throwing the ball ahead, playing aggressively on offense. Defensively, containing penetration and keeping the easy stuff away, just trying to put a good 48 minutes together. I’m excited.”
The challenge was somewhat eased as the Kings also had a substantial number of injuries at the time, balancing the circumstances on both sides.
The Warriors relied on a very young, inexperienced lineup for their game against the Kings due to the absence of Curry, Green, and Butler, offering valuable opportunities to emerging players according to coach Kerr.
