Marty: The album is Seventy, you are 70, and believe it or not, I’m 70 too. So I’m even more curious to hear about your thoughts of… ’cause it seems to be a major thing, doesn’t it?

Paul Kelly: I’ve never really paid much attention to how old I am, but suddenly it changes how people treat you. I remember three big birthdays. Forty felt really significant—it felt like I was officially an adult. Also, at 40, people close to me, friends, colleagues started passing away. That tends to happen in the music industry because quite a few of us die young. That time marked a real turning point, where some of us keep living and some don’t.
