Safer Calgary

Safer Calgary

The Calgary Police Service, in partnership with the City of Calgary, the Government of Alberta, and local social agencies, is joining efforts to strengthen public safety in key areas affected by crime and disorder, particularly downtown and along transit routes.

Community Approach

Through coordinated operations and support initiatives, the focus is to reduce open drug activity, trafficking, and other unsafe behaviours in public spaces. The enforcement of laws and bylaws remains essential, but collaboration with community partners is crucial to address the underlying causes of such issues.

“Public spaces are meant to be safe, respectful and welcoming for everyone, and right now, our community is telling us they don’t feel safe in our public spaces.”

Current Challenges

Downtown Calgary has reached a six-year high in violent incidents, showing a 20 percent rise compared to the five-year average. In 2025, approximately 75 percent of disorder calls in the city centre relate to disturbances, indecent acts, unwanted guests, and drug-related issues.

Shared Responsibility

The CPS emphasizes that public spaces should be used appropriately and free from behaviour that threatens safety or causes fear. Compassion and social services guide the strategy, but enforcement remains a vital part of ensuring the wellbeing and confidence of all citizens.

Author’s summary: The Calgary Police Service and community partners unite to restore safety and trust in public spaces through combined social support and firm law enforcement.
