Bruce Springsteen, known as The Boss, performed his iconic song “Thunder Road” at the Library Lions Gala held in the New York Public Library’s Rose Main Reading Room in New York City on Monday, November 4, 2024.
Springsteen joined a distinguished group of inductees into the New York Public Library’s Hall of Fame, alongside director Shonda Rhimes, novelist Louise Erdrich, writer Daniel Kehlmann, writer-musician James McBride, and author James Patterson.
“I have never played a (blanking) library!” said Springsteen, sharing his surprise at performing in such a unique venue after a career playing fireman’s fairs, weddings, bar mitzvahs, bowling alleys, pizza parlors, hockey rinks, and football stadiums.
Before his performance, a video screened for the 500 guests at the black-tie event showed how libraries influenced the inductees. Springsteen reflected on his own experiences:
“My town only had about 10,000 people, but there in the center of it was the library, and it was this place where the rest of the world was waiting. It gave me this greater sense of possibility… it was a sanctuary.”
The Freehold Public Library, which Springsteen referenced, is located at 28½ East Main Street.
