PlayStation is at last adding cloud gaming to the PlayStation Portal, though access requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. The update was announced earlier this week by Sony, signaling a notable step forward for the handheld device.
The PlayStation Portal, a handheld companion to the PlayStation 5, has struggled to gain traction since its release. By last summer, only about 3% of PlayStation 5 owners had purchased one. The console depends on streaming gameplay from a connected PlayStation 5 and is not fully independent.
With the latest update, users will now be able to stream “select digital PS5 games from their own library” without directly linking to their console. Cloud gaming will work through PlayStation Plus Premium, the top subscription tier.
Sony confirmed that “PlayStation Portal owners can now use cloud gaming with select PS5 titles via PlayStation Plus Premium — no console connection required.”
The rise of the Steam Deck highlighted the demand for handheld gaming devices capable of playing anywhere — from home to travel. Sony’s move to enhance the Portal with cloud play aims to compete within this rapidly developing market.
The update could make the PlayStation Portal more than just a remote display for the PS5, potentially adding new life to the platform.
Sony enhances the struggling PlayStation Portal with cloud gaming support, but full access remains locked behind the pricey PlayStation Plus Premium tier.
