Mysterious Lakes and Other Attractions

Adventures of an Expat by Dixie Johnson. Much of Slovenia has an unusual base of limestone, called karst, which has eroded away in places and created unique features.

For example, a lake near Ljubljana floods and freezes in winter, allowing families to enjoy ice-skating until spring arrives and the water sinks away, leaving a lovely green meadow.

Dixie Johnson taught at a travel and tourism college in Portorož, where she had fun with lessons and students. One assignment was for each student to plan a weekend in their hometown, entertaining her as a tourist.

One young man invited me to visit him, where he would take me skydiving. I joked with him, saying, “Oh, nice. After I arrive in your town, you toss me out of an airplane.”

Another student invited Dixie to her hometown, Idrija, where she learned much about the area. Idrija is in a valley among high hills and has a rich history of mercury mining.
